Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's making you fat and diseased...Posted on April 12th, 2007 |

How can you, in a week or less, get dramatic relief from all the symptoms you thought you had to live with the rest of your life?
I'll get to that in just a minute...
Last week, I showed you how addressing the toxins that make us sick and fat can help create long-term health, vitality, and weight loss.
Today, I'm going to tell you about the second hidden culprit that's linked to everything from obesity to all the chronic diseases of aging.
And I'll give you the key to solving this problem -- and unlocking good health.
Over the years, I've helped patient after patient achieve good health and automatic weight loss.
But what I've asked patients to do is so simple that anyone can do it -- and get the same great results.
Now, I've created a simple 1-week plan for everyone.
In this week's blog, I'm going to tell you about something you've heard me talk about before.
But it's so important that I want to emphasize it again and show you how it's a hidden cause of poor health.
==> I'm talking about inflammation.
You're probably familiar with the pain, swelling, redness, and heat that classically signify inflammation. It's something just about every one out there has experienced.
Inflammation is part of the body's natural defense system.
When your body senses foreign invaders, a specific cascade of events is set off in which your white blood cells and some special chemicals called cytokines mobilize to protect you.
This normal type of inflammation is a good thing. It helps your body protect and heal itself.
However, when your immune system shifts out of balance, inflammation can run rampant -- causing a chronic, smoldering fire inside your body that contributes to disease and weight gain.
The causes of this type of inflammation are all around you.
The sugar you eat, high doses of the wrong oils and fats in your diet, hidden food allergens, lack of exercise, chronic stress, and hidden infections all trigger a raging, unseen inflammation deep in your cells and tissues.
And this inflammation leads to every one of the major chronic diseases of aging -- heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, and more.
It's also by far the major contributor to obesity.
Being fat is being inflamed -- period!
It's simple.
If you don't address inflammation by eliminating hidden food allergens or sensitivities and by eating an anti-inflammatory diet, you will never succeed at effective and permanent weight loss.
==> Hidden sensitivities and allergies to food you eat every day are making you sick and fat.
When most people think of food allergies, they usually imagine someone eating a peanut and ending up in the emergency room with a swollen tongue, hives, and not being able to breathe.
That's what is called an immediate allergy (also known as an IgE hypersensitivity reaction). This is very serious but not common.
But there is a different type of reaction to foods that is much less dramatic and deadly -- but still very troublesome.
It is called a delayed allergy (or IgG delayed hypersensitivity reaction).
This reaction is much more common and creates a lot of suffering for millions of people.
It's mostly ignored by conventional medicine, yet it plays a HUGE role in many chronic illnesses and weight problems.
This type of delayed allergic reaction can cause symptoms anywhere from a few hours to a few days after ingestion.
It also causes a wide range of problems like weight gain, fluid retention, fatigue, brain fog, irritable bowel syndrome, mood problems, headaches, sinus and nasal congestion, joint pains, acne, eczema, and more.
If you hear someone say dismissively, "Oh, you just lost water weight," they're right (at first), because eating foods you are allergic to causes inflammation, which leads to swelling and fluid retention.
Getting rid of this fluid by reducing inflammation is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.
It is what will allow your body to start the healing process so you can achieve permanent weight loss and optimal health.
Consuming a low-allergy diet for just 1 week will help you eliminate the excess swelling and fluid that accumulates in your tissues from food-induced chronic inflammation.
Despite criticisms you may have heard about losing ONLY water weight, this is essential for you body to begin to heal and detoxify.
And the side effect is that you lose significant weight -- quickly and safely.
Let me explain a little more.
In my practice, treating food allergies and improving nutrition in general is the single most powerful tool I have to treat, reverse, and even cure hundreds of diseases that conventional medicine fails at miserably.
These include allergies, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, fatigue, sinus problems, hormonal disorders, obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, digestive diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, and colitis, and even mood disorders like depression and anxiety -- just to name a few.
You see, we are seeing an epidemic of inflammatory diseases.
In fact nearly every modern disease -- everything from autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and cancer to obesity, diabetes, and dementia -- is caused by inflammation!
These chronic diseases affect 125 million Americans. That means in the average family of three, at least one person has a chronic disease caused by inflammation.
In my practice, helping people treat food allergies and food sensitivities is one of the most helpful things I do.
So what have I found after years of testing people for IgG allergies and teaching them how to use elimination diets to help recover from their chronic symptoms and illnesses?
While everyone is different, there are some foods that irritate the immune system more than others.
They are gluten (wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt, kamut), dairy (milk, cheese, butter, yogurt), corn, eggs, soy, nuts, nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers1, potatoes, eggplant), citrus, and yeast (baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, and fermented products).
These foods can also cause acute allergic reactions. But those are rare, generally affecting less than 1 percent of the population. When they occur they are serious, permanent, and need to be treated seriously.
But for more than 50 percent of us, there are some foods that just don't agree with us and prevent vibrant, good health.
==> How Do You Know If You Are Allergic or Sensitive to Foods?
There are two ways to find out if you are reacting to foods.
One is a blood test for IgG antibodies to foods. This is useful and can pinpoint trouble areas, but it is not 100 percent accurate.
The second is a simple and well-accepted treatment called elimination/ provocation.
This means you get rid of the top trouble foods for 1 to 4 weeks, then reintroduce them one at a time and see what happens.
Eliminating foods that cause allergic reactions or sensitivities is the basis for the remarkable results people have -- like losing weight, feeling better, and getting rid of chronic symptoms -- when they follow the detox phase of "UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss."
This program is based on a simple elimination diet: getting rid of gluten, dairy, eggs, and yeast products.
What happens?
Very quickly -- in a week or less -- people notice dramatic relief from all the symptoms they thought they had to live with the rest of their lives!
==> Why Do You Become Sensitive or Allergic to Foods?
Simply put, your diet, the way you live, and the medications you take are to blame.
These things injure your gut.
They change the bacteria and damage the gut's lining, which is the critical barrier that keeps your immune system from having to deal with all the garbage, toxins, and allergens inside your intestinal tract.
This damage is called a leaky gut.
And so the food particles "leak" across the damaged barrier and your immune system (60 percent of which is right under that lining) starts to attack these partially digested food particles.
That's when you develop IgG food intolerances or allergies.
Let me recap.
When your gut is leaky, partially digested foods get exposed to your immune system, which then creates an abnormal response to something pretty normal -- food.
That creates weight gain and so many chronic health problems.
==> Finding and Fixing Delayed Food Allergies and Sensitivities
Just because you have a food allergy or intolerance doesn't mean you have to suffer with it.
In fact, there's a lot you can do to deal with the problem, rebalance your system, and eliminate chronic symptoms.
Next week, I'm going to explain how to identify food allergies and give you the tools you need to begin to heal your gut and repair your digestive and immune systems.
When you do these things, you'll be more resilient and able to tolerate a wider range of foods.
The plan is designed to get you started on the road to finding and healing this common obstacle to health and weight loss.
Just think about giving yourself the gift of a weeklong vacation for your body and soul.
You might be surprised by what's on the other side.
You'll be following the same simple program that I use with my own patients to eliminate food allergies.
In my next blog, I'll give you more details of this 1-week plan to detoxify and cool off inflammation.
I think you'll find that the results are remarkable.
But I don't want you to just believe what I am saying -- I want you to prove it to yourself!
Now I'd like to hear from you...
Have you noticed how certain foods affect your health and weight?
What have you done to identify and eliminate these foods?
When you eliminate problematic foods from your diet, how does your body respond?

I found out a couple of years ago I have gluten intolerance. It's made a huge difference in my life since I stopped eating gluten and when I accidentally eat it, I definitely can tell. I seem to have a problem with garlic and onion as well. I'm sure there are other products and I should probably do the elimination diet.

When I was in my 20's, I had an delayed allergic reaction to fresh garden tomatoes. My eyes swelled shut, throat itched, etc. I can eat processed or cooked tomatoes without a severe reaction, but I still get indigestion especially after an evening meal. I have not eaten a fresh garden tomato since I was 20. Prior to that age, I had enjoyed BLT's and tomatoes with only experiencing itchy ears and no swelling. Too much acid, I expect. Lately, I am able to enjoy most fruits w/out any serious reaction.I just try little bits at first then gradually increase and I can tolerate. Apples, bananas are best tolerated....even pineapple. I have just recently gone thru Menopause. I feel great but have 20 pounds to loose and it is like glue..won't go away. I belong to a gym and do cardio everyday and weights every other day and I have been doing this for over a year. Only to lose a pound or two...the positive, at least I am not gaining. I am not on any meds..no bp or antidepressants. I do have some stress but only the stress I create for myself. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Hi Dr. Hyman, I'm hoping to get some advice on food allergies. My husband Nic fought on the front lines in Iraq from Feb - May 2003, then came home and about 3 weeks later developed sensitivites to beef, pork, shrimp & lobster. We thought it was an actual food allergy, but when tested, the allergist told us it was not an allergy. When he ingests the aforementioned foods, about 4 - 6 hours later he breaks out in hives that send him to the ER for benadryl and epi shots. Testing has been done for cancers and mastoidcytosis, both negative. Could this reaction be considered an IgG food allergy? Any advice would be very much appreciated as we have been dealing with this undiagnosed issue for almost 5 years. Thank you so much! -Abbie

I am curious about the high quality protein, eggs and whole grains were included in the examples provided but in this weeks blog they were identified as inflammation culprits.
re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
This is exactly what I have been dealing with with the help of a Naturopath for over a year. I had the antibodies test and now know the foods I have sensitivities to - not surprisingly, they are all the foods you mention: dairy, soy, peanuts, all foods with gluten meaning wheat, nightshade veggies, etc.
My question is this - what CAN I EAT? It seems almost everything except for vegetables and some fruits are off limits. Is there a book with suggestions for recipes, etc? I have a family, so cooking for everyone has been a big issue as none of them have the same issues.
Thank you for any recommendations!

My lower back and joints ache like crazy after eating potatoes or tomatoes and I've learned to avoid them when I can. Definitely a food allergy!
re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
Potato chips! I have been living in northern europe until January, and didn't like the chips there so I didn't eat them. Moved back to the U.S., got a bag last weekend and broke into 'em a couple days ago. They gave me gas and my weight went up 2 pounds overnight. And, now I know why! The remains of the chips are now in the trash and I won't buy them any more. I'll test with other forms of potato to see if they do the same thing.

Thank you for shining a light on this somewhat obscure issue (inflamation caused by food allegies and sensitivities). Nine years ago my husband and son were diagnosed with Celiac, gluten intolerance. This hidden food allergy almost resulted in my husband's death, and did manifest into a number of autoimmune diseases that he is still struggling to living with. It took over 11 years to reach this diagnosis during which time he suffered sever and cronic health issues. Hopefully imparting your knowledge of IgG type allergies will enlighten not only the general popoulation but the medical community as well.

I had finally gotten most of my extra weight off, the stubborn last 8 pounds was hanging on. Recently I started yoga, doing it 4 - 5 times a week, plus another practice that has me breathing deeply. The 8 have just MELTED off - it's amazing. I think lots of healthy, deep breathing has been a big factor.

a thought for your review...i am wondering this:what are your thoughts on "sugar scrubs" that are all the rage right now.....isn't that just sugar transdermally saturating one's body in much the same way nicotine or pain meds are introduced for immediate absorption? isn't that something one should consider when trying to de-toxify?
re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a number of years ago and suffered pain, brain fog, poor sleep, etc. I was lucky enough to eventually find a doctor who looks for underlying causes and understands the role of nutrition. He suggested that I eliminate wheat from my diet for two weeks, to see if that was part of the problem. Within four days I had more energy, less pain, and could feel myself standing up straighter. I also found that potatoes and eggplant caused problems. I haven't eaten eggplant since, and have limited potatoes to once or twice a month. I did, however, eat tomatoes and red bell peppers.
I'm currently dealing with the arthritis variety of Lyme Disease. As part of the treatment, I've eliminated all nightshades (potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant) and have felt improvement in my knees, in particular. Until I did the elimination, I didn't realize how often I was using tomatoes and tomato-based products in cooking, and also red bell peppers. I hope that eventually I'll be able to tolerate these things again, although in much greater moderation!

re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
Dear Dr. Hyman,
Yes! I have no doubt inflammation is the body's reaction that causes havoc. I need to tell you something, and ask you a question about it, as follows:
I am obese (a 60 yr. old male, 5 ft. 7 inches tall, 295 lb.), with type 2 diabetes, and have been trying all kinds of approaches to becoming and keeping healthy. One of the things is that I have bought a two-person far-infrared sauna, and take 25-40 minute sessions in it, at about 125 degrees F, perhaps 3-5 times a week.
After each session, I feel very weak though, and my body (inside) feels hot for a day or two afterward. I've gone to an accupuncturist who is concerned about my internal body heat. Is it possible that the sauna is bad for me and causing even more inflammation than I already have?
Thank you.

re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
I've noticed very subtle changes when I exclude dairy from my diet. Although I truly enjoy yogurt, once I stopped it's consumption along with any cheeses and such, I have less throat mucus that actually kept me from speaking at times without clearing my throat constantly. I exercise regular and love to do it without prompting, but still have that little middle pot that wont go away. You know that last bit of small adispose fat that remains. I do believe it to be yeast overgrowth (candida) and will start to avoid excessive grains, yeast in other products and start a cleanse soon to soecifically address that. Perhaps use a good anti-fungal life caprylic acid, aged garlic, beta glucan , etc.. to experiment with their properties. I also have white spots (vitiligo) for about 2 years and they are gradually getting more wide spread. They too could be linked to fungus. Grains and certain types of other foods I believe contribute to this condition. I am trying the amino phenylalanine with uva (sunlight exposure to see what it may improve.thanks

vitiligo
can you tell me if your VITILIGO was ever healed or got better by this diet. thanks!

Dear Dr. Hyman:
I am fat and arthritic. I noticed several years ago that eating too much potatoes and tomatoes caused increased pain in my joints. I have made an effort to reduce the amount of these foods that I eat. I do not eat bread products very often either. My problem is...what foods do I substitute instead? I cook for a family and no one else seems to have this problem.
Thank you.
Susan

I frankly MARVEL at how RESISTANT my body seems to losing weight.
I have three ways that worked in the past, and still would probably work: starvation (IOW, DRASTIC curtaining of food intake, combined w/increased physical activity to keep blood sugar levels high).
Fasting, which can really be great, but its hard to get into (IOW, you have to overcome your body's natural tendency to demand food, which can take at least 2 days of fasting to accomplish); and three, Atkins no carb/low carb dieting.
These are all effective, but Atkins, on the no carb level is STULTIFYINGLY BORING, and even if this could be overcome, it takes time, because you have to prepare special menus. its not TOO complex, but it does take some time. If you're on the go and busy like me, this is quite problematic.
Fasting and drastic curtailing of food intake is good too, but it just SO slash-and-burn.
Anyways, if there were some other way that was less onerous and drastic, I'd love to know mroe about that.

I have noticed if I eat a large amount of chocolate that I get a burning pain up the back of my neck. I also noticed recently that after eating Easter candy that the next day I was all stuffed up and stayed stuffed up for a couple days. Also I have found that when I eat really healthy and my intestines are eliminating quickly enough that I don't have as much problems with allergies during the high pollen days.
re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
I have been trying to eliminate the foods that I have become sensitive to for years (my list keeps growing). I can see by the list in the article that I still have a way to go. I am sensitive to just about everything you listed, and more.
About three years ago I started eating small amounts of wheat again, even though gluten affected me badly (I thought it was only if I ate too much, now I see that most of the reaction is probably hidden).
Suddenly, I went through a week of heart attack symptoms where they gave me nitro pills and blood thinners (both which took away my chest pains and shortness of breath temporarily). But every night for a week I would end up back in emergency. The nitro pills didn't give me the headache they should have if I wasn't having a heart attack. The battery of usual tests and xrays showed nothing. The doctors were baffled.
Every day I would eat light.. dry toast. After a week I thought I should have some protein and ate a tuna sandwich and my throat started to close off. I took some homeopathic antihistimins and Vit C and got ready to go to the hospital... and ALL symptoms stopped, including my chest pains and shortness of breath.
I quit eating the wheat and kept up with the anti-histimines and large doses of Vit C. Within 24 hours I was "cured". At the time I figured I was having a mild anaphylactic reaction that possibly restricted the flow of blood to my heart, causing me to feel like I was having a heart attack and eating a little wheat every day was just dragging it on.
24 hours after I started taking the antihistimines and Vit C I had a heart stress test done in the hopsital and walked 3.7 miles an hour at 80% and then ran for a minute at 90%... the day before I could barely make up two steps before I needed to stop and catch my breath. The doctors refused to believe it was an allergy even though they couldn't explain my miraculous recovery.
Reading this article makes me realize I was more on target than I thought. Thank you!

This is very much my question as well! I'm also vegetarian. If I cut out all that's in the list, what is left?

Dear Dr Hyman,
I am writing to tell you about my story of successfully loosing weight after reading Ultra-Metabolism. I bought your book after seeing you on Good Morning America last fall and lost 27 pounds since then and have kept the weight off. I didn’t realize how many bad habits I had in the foods that I was eating on regular basis. Eliminating items such as breakfast cereals, beef sandwiches, and caffeine and adding hazel nuts, sardines, and kalamata olives has made a world of difference. Your detox broth is not bad too!
I have been telling everyone who will listen about your book and will continue to do so.
The Ultra-Metabolism plan is simple and easy to follow and makes perfect sense.
Thanks Doctor!

re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
Hi,
I think that it is important to understand whether or not you have a wheat allergy or celiac desease. Celiac desease means that your body cannot tolerate gluten in any form and even the smallest crumb will damage your intestines. Gluten hides in many different ingredients that are not necessarity wheat. A savvy gastroenterologist will check your blood and see what nutrients you are deficient in and help you to get to where you should be health-wise. If he/she is not familiar with celiac desease however, you will not get the guidance that you need. Many doctors are not well schooled in that area. It would be well worth your time to study up on celiac desease. It has wreaked havoc with my family and has taken years of precious time and good health away from us.

I understand the importance of avoiding hormones from dairy - but it is OK if you strictly consume organic dairy only?
many thanks

re: Inflammation: How to cool the fire inside you that's makin
Years ago, my daughter suffered constant ear infections. After a round of doctors, I finally found one who did food allergy blood tests. The results that came back were shocking. My daughter was allergic to the main culprits, but also to minute things like black pepper and mustard. By allergic, I mean delayed allergy. We went on a three month elimination diet together (I didn't have the heart to eat a slice of bread while she ate rice crackers)I had a minor case of fibromyalgia at the time. Her symptoms and my symptoms disappeared in a few days-less than a week. I lost a great deal of weight and people were commenting on my renewed energy level. Even my skin looked great. Eventually my daughter was losing to much weight so I slowly reintroduced foods to her diet and to mine. She is still well, but occassionally, we remove the foods she was highly sensitive to. Now I find I have to go back on the diet Dr. Hyman recommends since my fibromyalgia is back full force and not so minor these days.It takes a great commitment, but once you get going, and if you are prepared by preshopping for replacement items, the work is well worth it.

Thank you for this.
I'm not really sure how I found your website tonight, but appears I needed to read this post. This is the only information I have ever read on this topic. I was beginning to think it was my own private theory.
I’m obese and I feel, that all I have to do is look at food and I gain wait. I have also been prone to phlegm my entire life. I have been watching how I react to food lately. Mood swings, mental clarity, and phlegm… need I say more. I even went and saw an Allergy specialist. That was a funny experience. The Allergy Doctors and the knowledge they practice by has not improved or changed in over 40 years. .
I let them prick test me. The Doc came in after the results came back - to discuss a small allergy to soy - that they had noticed.
I laughed..... but Doc there is a lot of foods that give me serious problems and I can even tell you some of them by my own charting.
I tried to explain to him that I have narrowed it down to 3 types of reactions. (1) I react by coughing within 15 minutes and feel a discharge of phlegm. – coughing will stop within 10 minutes (sugar is the worse) (2) Number 2, I call the bowel reaction. As it takes about 1 hour, then I get a bit fuzzy and more phlegm. White bread does this. (3) Ahhhh # 3, it’s the worse. I wake up like I have been out drinking for 3 days. I call this the full body freak out. Congestion, thicker phlegm, very foggy and it usually takes a day or two to bounce back. Oh… he said.. we call those food intolerances. Ok, I said. Can you help with the issues? No… we really don’t work much in that area.
Well, this was suppose to be a small feedback comment. So, I’ll stop here and go back to reading more of your material. Wow, I’m so happy I found this website.
Thanks gain, for this post.
PS: Please feel free to email “anything” that can help me. I’m an advocate of self help – gee like I have a choice – LOL.

I like to get a list of doctors that have this theoretical perspective in Miami-Dade County and Broward County in Florida. Please send the information ASAP.

For more than four years, I am always constipated, have gained alot of weight (220lbs). I have tried dieting. I eat no starch foods - my food is boiled (vegetables) and fruits.
When I checked with a doctor, I was told that I have diveticuticulosis (sorry about the spelling) and that I have to mind what I eat. I literally live on laxtives to be able to ease myself. I feel bloated all the time. Any advise/help given will be very much appreciated.
