Now for today’s blog ...
Did you know that you have two brains?
You have a brain and a GUT-brain.
And if you want a happy brain, you have to have a happy gut!
The gut-brain has its own independent nervous system. And it has more neurotransmitters and serotonin than the brain in your head.
You all know that you can get butterflies in your stomach, or lose your lunch (or worse) in very stressful situations. But did you know that what happens in your gut feeds right back to your brain?
Did you know that studies show that an irritable bowel (which affects nearly 60 million Americans) can cause an irritable brain? It isn’t being anxious and irritable that messes up your stomach, it is your stomach that makes you anxious and irritable.
Did you know that a bloated belly can cause a bloated and inflamed brain?
In this blog I will teach you how your gut and your brain are connected—and why you need to heal your gut if you want to heal your brain.
Your Second Brain
Dr. Michael Gershon of Columbia University has called the gut the “second brain.” In fact, your gut has a mind of its own—literally. While it is connected to the brain through an extensive network of wiring and communication systems, it is also the only “organ” besides the brain that has its own nervous system.
We call it the ENS, or enteric (or gut) nervous system, as opposed to the CNS, or central nervous system. This gut-brain actually comes from the same embryonic tissue as the brain-brain. And it is still connected via the autonomic nervous system—the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves.
Acting completely independently, the ENS has a number of important jobs. It keeps everything moving in the right direction, from the top down, by coordinating the contraction of muscle cells. It triggers the gut hormones and enzymes to be released from cells to promote digestion. It helps keep the blood flowing so when you absorb your food it can get to where it needs to go. And it controls the immune and inflammatory cells in the gut. (1)
All that happens in the background and is communicated back up to your brain via the autonomic nervous system. Think of it as two independent but inter-dependent businesses. They must coordinate and communicate but can also act independently.
Literally everything that happens in your gut is communicated to your brain via the ENS. If your gut is stressed out, if it is inflamed, if it has too few probiotics, or if the protective barrier that lets food in and keeps toxins out has been breached, your gut tells your brain about it.
That makes your brain unhappy.
So to have a happy brain, you have to have a happy gut.
And one of the best ways to do that is to heal your gut-immune system.
The Gut-Immune System
Some 60 percent of your immune system lies right under the one-cell-layer-thick lining of your gut.
Its job is to let in ONLY the good stuff—food in the form of amino acids, sugars, fats, minerals and vitamins—and KEEP OUT all the bad stuff, like toxic bacteria and undigested food particles.
In fact, if you laid your gut flat, it would be the size of a tennis court. And there are 3 pounds of bacteria comprising 500 species covering that surface.
If this surface breaks down—look out.
Your brain won’t be happy.
Your immune system will get activated, and start reacting to foods and toxins and bugs in your gut. This makes your brain and your mood inflamed!
You can also absorb toxic molecules into your bloodstream, which get to the brain and make you crazy. Take, for example, the patients with liver failure who go crazy because they can’t detoxify the poisons from their gut bacteria.
And what’s our treatment? We sterilize their intestines with antibiotics.
The problem is that the way we live, and all the drugs we take, damage our whole gut ecosystem. This includes our sugar- and junk food-rich, low-fiber diet, our overuse of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and acid-blocking medications, and our chronic stress.
So what happens when things go awry and our guts break down from the total load of stressors and toxins on our bodies?
We can develop everything from depression to ADD, from autism to Alzheimer’s, from OCD to anxiety—and just plain bad moods and brain fog.
Let me tell you a remarkable story of a gut gone bad and how fixing the gut fixes the brain.
A Self-Intoxicating Little Girl
One spring afternoon a beautiful little six-year-old girl walked into my office with her mother and sister. On the surface she seemed quite normal, but then the story of her tragic life unfolded.
This first grade student was extraordinarily aggressive with her sister and her peers—kicking, pinching, and hitting them. She threatened to kill herself regularly.
She cut her mother and sister out of family pictures. She was anxious, negative, and hopeless. Temper tantrums, mood swings, and attention seeking were regular patterns of behavior.
She was also diagnosed with OCD and “perfectionism.”
She didn’t make friends at school, and her mother was called daily about her disruptive behavior in class.
She had been a very colicky baby, had frequent diaper and vaginal yeast infections as a child, with vaginal and rectal itching (which gives you a pretty strong idea that yeast is hanging around), and had very sensitive skin.
And she loved sugar and refined pastries and carbs.
Now, she had no digestive complaints, but I have learned that even if a child or adult doesn’t complain about their gut, mischief can still be brewing. The bacteria and yeast literally ferment the sugary, starchy foods in the diet, producing “auto-intoxication” with alcohol—a byproduct of this process. (2) The violent, aggressive behavior so commonly seen in drunks can occur from alcohol produced by yeasts in the gut. I wondered if this little girl had a little auto-brewery in her belly.
On my detective hunt I found she was low in magnesium, which can make you pretty irritable, and was deficient in zinc, which is so important to help your digestive enzymes break down your food.
She also had delayed food allergies (IgG) to wheat, rye, oats, and barley (all gluten-containing grains).
And of course she had low levels of DHA—the brain-balancing omega-3 fat.
She also had the typical problems with her methylation—evidence of severe vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate deficiency.
And she had a lot of trouble making enough energy in her cells, which you will learn about later in this series.
These problems occur in patterns, because they are all connected. It is not usually one thing. It is almost always everything. But the gut is often at the center of the problem—even if there are no digestive symptoms.
The most incredible finding in this young girl’s case was the sky-high indicators of overgrowth of bacteria and yeast in her gut. I had never seen levels this high in anyone.
Just getting her on a gluten- and dairy-free, whole-foods, organic diet; some cod liver oil; magnesium; methylation helpers like B6, B12, and folate; a multivitamin; and some probiotics improved her condition. (3)
But when I gave her an antibiotic to clear out the bad bugs in her gut, (4) followed by an antifungal drug, she transformed into a well-behaved little girl.
Her aggressiveness, negativity, and hopelessness were gone. Her mother said she used to be punished ten times a day and got into trouble at school every day. All that stopped when we cleared up the bad bugs in her gut and helped her get her flora and gut ecosystem back in balance.
She was suffering from “auto-intoxication,” which led to crazy behavior. This process of a bug producing toxins that modify actual brain chemistry is just one way the gut can affect the brain. There are many more.
Many studies have shown abnormal, toxin-producing flora in children with developmental problems like these. Normal kids have normal flora.
Happy people have healthy flora!
Dr. David Relman from Stanford is studying the DNA of the ecosystem of bugs in the gut. He has found the bugs who live with you in your gut may be more important in determining your health than your own DNA fingerprint. A healthy gut is a healthy brain!
So what do you do about it?
Be kind to your gut:
2. If you can, get off of antibiotics, steroids, anti-inflammatories, and acid-blocking medication.
3. Try digestive enzymes.
4. Try probiotics, which are the beneficial bacteria that normally live in your gut.
5. Eat a whole-foods diet with plenty of fiber like beans, nuts, veggies, fruits, seeds, and whole grains.
And remember, if you want a happy brain you have to have a happy gut.
I give you more details on how to make your gut and your brain happy in my new book, The UltraMind Solution.

Medicine for yeast infection
It is true that bad bacteria affect the brain and in my case even gluten free grains do that. But solution is not that easy for me and many other people I know.Taking antibiotics was the cause of yeast and candida infection.Antifulgal medicine helped me temporarily only. Last time I took Duflican I was intoxicated after 3 pills and had to stop it. I think there is more to search in my health problems and I am looking for doctor who can do that. Recently one of them found that I have low tyroid function even with good tests. But I don`t know whether it is the result of infection itself or long term problem that caused reoccuring yeast infection. Again I will have to try some supplements and may be medicine this time for tyroids. I don`t know how long my search will take, I hope not whole life.
Thank you very much. My best
Gut as barometer
I have believed for several years now that my gut is at the root of a lot of my health issues. I have gone to several doctors and supposed "naturopaths" looking for answers, and most everyone wants me to take medication, especially for my anxiety. I have spent hundreds of dollars on counselling that never really seems to have any lasting effect and I have a huge library of self-help books at home, none of which have done the trick either.
I like the approach you have, Dr. Hyman, on this all-important topic, however, what does one do when they have all kinds of food, medication, and vitamin sensitivities? I am so fed up with having reactions to any of these, that I've given up finding a solution. Even what is considered a "natural vitamin" gives me trouble of some kind. And most of the time people don't believe the kind of reactions I have, but I know my body and know when something is happening.
It makes sense if I have an irritable bowel that I would have many of these sensitivities, so how does one start taking supplements, etc. to combat the sensitivities if they are too sensitive to do so?
Thank you.
Gut as Barometer
Interesting. I thought I was the only person in the world who reacts to all kinds of foods, medications, and vitamins (or so the medical and alternative community, as well as friends and family would have you believe). I have not found any answers/solutions to these kinds of problems. However I also have long suspected that my 30-year-history with "anxiety" was related to "not feeling well", while the medical community maintains that the "anxiety" is the reason for "not feeling well". Not. I've maintained that I don't have the "anxiety" when I feel well, which is seldom. Like you, most meds, vitamins, supplements, foods, etc. will make me "sick" and bring on "anxiety". The symptoms I experience are too numerous to mention, which futher makes everyone think "it's all in your head". I hope someone out there can shed some light on this.
This is interesting to
This is interesting to me. I want to ask whether you have tried enzymes? That was most effective for me. Also, have you tried an all-vegetable diet? Following a doctor's recommendation, I went on an all-raw-vegetable diet for three days. I felt wonderful, and my energy increased drastically; I'm not sure how happy my stomach was, though, because the whole time I craved soft food.
I keep telling myself that I'm going to do this again, but haven't been able to get up the willpower for it.
BIOSET
Hello,
My food allergies and sensitivities have been alleviated through BidSet.
BioSET® (Bioenergetic Sensitivity and Enzyme Therapy) is an innovative healing system founded by Dr. Ellen Cutler, D.C., that incorporates acupressure, energy medicine, immunology, enzyme therapy, and nutrition to assist the body's natural healing process. The BioSET® system encompasses three branches of healing:
Organ-specific detoxification
Enzyme therapy, including nutrition and proper diet
A revolutionary, noninvasive acupressure technique for eliminating food and environmental sensitivities
Dr. Ellen Cutler, D.C., is the author of the groundbreaking books "Live Free from Asthma and Allergies," "Micro Miracles: Discover the Healing Power of Enzymes," and "The Food Allergy Cure." She offers workshops and seminars on enzyme therapy throughout the world.
I read "The Food Allergy Cure" and started practicing her concepts using enzymes and the accupressure techniques to clear the allergies. I went to two doctors that practice her BioSet method and have continued on my own too. It works for me and highly recommend trying it for anyone who seems to be allergic to everything. It has made a huge difference in my life and combined with Dr Hyman's recommendations is a complete solution.
I believe that my daughters
I believe that my daughters seizures are directly connection to nutritional choices as she was growing. Not particularly a "junk" diet but high in simple carbs, wheat, casein, soy, corn. I am not sure what she might be sensitive to, as her conventional doctors don't want to test for that. I have been working on "cleaning" up her diet, but it is sometimes difficult as she is a teen.
I believe there is a direct connection to the catamenial seizures she is having and I am working with supplements to help regulate her hormones, liver function, and mineral deficiencies.
Over the past two years I have been working alone on this as doctors do not want to touch my "theory". A GI doctor that I was referred to, said he knew of no connection between the gut and the brain. That her constipation of 14 yrs, could not possibly have resulted in seizure activity. In fact he thought the concept of "triggers" was my own made up theory. A neurologist said diet and hormones could not be causing seizures.
How many times can one run around in circles trying to find knowledgeable doctors?
steroids/antibiotics
Dr. Hyman,
Do you have a suggestion for someone's gut health while on a necessary long-term dose of steroids and antibiotics? Although it is important that I take them, I'd really like to be able to prevent some of the problems these drugs can potentially cause.
Thanks,
Heidi
I'm not a doctor, I'm just
I'm not a doctor, I'm just positing a theory to you. Since the antibiotics kill off the probiotics, allowing the yeast to flourish, it seems logical to me that you should take probiotics at the same time. It also seems to me that you should severely limit all carbs, especially sweets, so that the yeast has less to feed on.
Liver detox
When I began on the Ultra Simple Diet, I had been having sever problems with my stomach. I finally found out that I had multiple gallstones and although hesitant I had it removed. Now for the first time in 25 years, I rarely take any antacids or protein pump inhibitors. If I eat whole foods and stay away from just a few things I never have to even burp (excuse me). I take digestive enzymes and plan to return to probiotics especially after all the junk I have eaten over the holidays.
Unfortunatly, after years of improper digestive functioning I have a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Although not serious now it could become cirrosis of the liver, which would be very serious. My doctors believed that it would stabalize after the surgery, but my last test almost 6 months later still showed the same elevated levels. I have been taking milk thistle during the entire 6 months at least once daily, however my supplement consultant felt that I may need to increase my dose and improve the quality of the supplement. My doctor suggested I take asprin or tylenol for my fibromyalgia pain instead of ibupropen. Do you have any additional suggestions? I have ordered the book but since you briefly mentioned the seriousness of improper liver function, I would love more information. In my research, I also learned the value of the liver in regards to hormones too. It seems that getting my liver renewed maybe the difference between night and day for me and my mental clarity.
One day at a time to a healthier life.
Dairy causing "Brain Allergy"
I've struggled with huge behavior issues with my youngest son for years. He has been extremely aggressive, confrontational and uncooperative, and couldn't function in a classroom setting. I finally started him in public school kindergarten this year so that he would have access to resources. The school had him on a reduced classroom schedule (attending only 1 hour) because he couldn't successfully control himself for the full 3 hours and 20 min. of kindergarten. He was still being sent to the office almost daily for aggressive behavior with his peers. A year ago I had him evaluated by a psychologist, and he saw a psychiatrist this past fall.
Two months ago my father had a random conversation with a friend of his who told him that when her son was 16 she discovered that her son seemed to have a "brain allergy" to dairy. I then cut out dairy in my son's diet (in fact I would say that his diet had always been primarily dairy based with daily amounts of yogurt, milk and cheese). Within that first week the teacher and I saw an amazing turn around -- he has become a happy, kind, sweet boy -- able to stay the full school time, and also finally able to make friends. At home his siblings and I have finally been able to enjoy family life! It's amazing.
I told the pediatrician and the psychiatrist about how dairy seems to affect him, and they both were unaware of any research confirming any direct correlation. I've researched the web and have been quite shocked to not find substantial evidence of what I know to be a very real phenomenon. I attended a party this holiday season and an acquaintance told me of this article and just forwarded it to me. I'm so thankful to read about this gut/brain relationship, and also read about the story of the little 6 year old girl, because it's so similar to my story. I'm very much interested in continuing my research to learn more about what is going on with my son, his "gut", and this toxifying result that he will have to pay attention to for the rest of his life.
By the way... after about six weeks of no dairy, we did a little experiment. He was begging me for a cup of hot chocolate, so I let him have one to see what would happen. No joke, within a half hour he was so ornery and irritable -- getting into fights with his siblings over nothing. It was clear that his behavior was out of his control -- no matter how much he tried he could not maintain good behavior -- the dairy was creating that toxic "brain allergy".
Thank you for your research and also the suggestions for creating a better balanced gut/brain relationship... I know it will help guide me in finding the right combination to help my son.

brain allergy
I just found this web site after watching Dr. Hyman on PBS and I just happened to tune in when he was talking about the 6 yr. old girl with gut/brain issues and I was stunned, because it sounded so similar to my son, who is now 18. Then I saw your blog entry and ,though very envious of your discovery early on with your son, wanted to congratulate you. You may have saved yourself years of fruitless searching and heartache, like we have experienced with our son. At 6 months old, he had his first taste of milk (actually frozen yogurt), as he was breastfed and restricted to only soy based formula, as recommended by our pediatrician due to my husbands shellfish allergy. At six months she said it should be ok to introduce a little milk products. After about 5 minutes he broke out into hives all over his body. She recommended keeping him off of milk til about 18 months. And it just occurred to me today, that was the age his behavior problems began. I re-introduced milk, but he no longer had the hive reaction, so we thought he was fine - made no connection to the behavior, of course. Over the next several years we literally spent thousands of dollars going from doctor, to therapists, to psychologists, etc. He displayed similar symptoms to your son, although he seemed able to control his outbursts at school (for the most part). Our home life has been awful. He argues and fights with us constantly - still. Our relationship is strained and has been for years. He dislikes his younger brother and they have no relationship at all. I'm crying as I write this because I'm realizing now that this could have been the problem all along and it would have been so simple to address had someone been able to telll me. Other symptoms he displayed, were periods of severe constipation, difficulty sleeping, severe anxiety, including hyperventilation and vomiting, almost on a daily basis when he was between 4 to 10 years old, compulsive and obsessive behaviors, and extreme mood swings and irritability. I know this is long winded, but I just had to get this off my chest to someone. My husband just gives me a "look" now when I try to come up with another "miracle cure" for our sons behavior. I guess we both felt it was too late to change him given his age. You mentioned your friend who's son is 16 and she's just now discovering his milk allergy. Did she have any luck convincing him to stop drinking milk? My son would probably just look at me and roll his eyes. Thanks for listening and good luck to you.
My wake up call came on the
My wake up call came on the 4th day of preschool when I was asked to pick my 4-year old up early due to a violent incident with a classmate who merely gave my son a dirty look. This was after the first 3 days of tantrums, hitting, kicking, body slams and a head lock (no, my son doesn't watch these sorts of things on tv). We knew there were a few development delays going on with him but just couldn't put our finger on what was causing them. After consulting with an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, a "play" therapist, a psychologist, in addition to our regular pediatrician, we came across a developmental pediatrician. She put together the whole picture for us.
An hour after birth my son was given formula to stimulate his metabolism so he could increase his body temperature. Immediately his belly blew up like a balloon. The hospital thought there might have been some kind of intestinal blockage and began running all kinds of tests. They found nothing. The bloated belly, incessant crying, and what seemed like colic on steroids lasted for 8 months while I breastfed (eliminating dairy and whatnot out of my diet, as well) until I weaned him to soy formula. Overnight, he became a different baby. Still the doctors would never say it was lactose intolerance or milk allergy. The pediatric gastroenterologist had no answers for me.
So, 4 years later the new doctor began to deliver her diagnosis. We were sure it was ADHD with ODD (Oppositional/Defiant Disorder - basically, everything is a battle all day long). No, it was heavy metal toxicity with dysbiosis (an overgrowth of the unhealthy bacteria and yeast in the gut), and IgG food allergies (delayed onset which cause bahaviorial problems). Lab tests confirmed the doctor's suspicions. Our first step in my son's treatment was to remove all dairy, eggs, and peanuts from his diet. The boy was used to eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drinking 3 cups of milk every day. The change in his behavior/personality was remarkable. The anger and aggression almost disappeared and his speech started to make more sense. He only continued to make improvements with the addition of many vitamins and minerals to his diet (since his gut had not been properly digesting his food for so long), digestive enzymes, and probiotics. Next he required antifungal medication due to the stubborn candida overgrowth in his digestive tract along with a strict no sugar/no starch diet for a few weeks. After this treatment, all signs of hyperactivity were gone. We were amazed! Eventually, we began to treat the toxic metals in his body, which is a slow and gradual process. We continue to see even more gradual improvements in behavior (impulse control, anger) and cognitively and we couldn't be more thankful for this doctor who has opened our eyes to treatments that don't involve medicating our child for what "looks" like ADHD for his lifetime. My son is in a regular 1st grade class now and is one of the brightest in the class. He can still be a rowdy boy, but doesn't stand out from the other boys in his class. His doctor has dropped his diagnosis.
I was thrilled to find Dr. Hyman, who seems to practice this same type of medicine as my son's doctor. As my face-time with my son's doctor is limited to one-hour visits once every few months, I find the information on his websites to be invaluable. I recommend you educate yourself on IgG food allergies. My insurance wouldn't pay for the testing, as they argue that it is not recognized by mainstream medicine to be a legitimate diagnosis. Even my allergist doesn't give it any credence. However, it sounds like your son could benefit from this testing and it may provide the "proof" he needs to believe it is the cause (or one of the causes) of his issues. Best of luck to you!
This was a great medicine
This was a great medicine article I enjoyed and documented more about. I knew we have a Gut brain but i never knew it have a tottaly different nervous sistem and so on. I`d like to read more about since I`m planing to follow medicine later on. As far as i know, anabolic steroids are affenting the gut brain.
Heart Palpitations with food allergy/Gluten Free
truhart
I have recently found out that I am Gluten AND Soy intolerant. Around the first of June, I developed constant heart palpitations. I believe it began further back but it just felt like my heart flipped in my chest very occasionally (gluten intolerance before I knew, stress, anxiety?). After a medical doctor gave me Paxil to try for anxiety after I had already told them my heart was going fast when I woke in the mornings---I took the Paxil and my heart pounded hard and fast (June 3rd). After I went to the ER after many hours of this, the doc then gave me Bystolic which stopped the palps but made my BP low (I had no BP problems) and made me really nauseous. I weaned off that medication (Bystolic). I still have the palpitations constantly, varying from mild to not quite severe. I have been tested for food allergies and a few chemical sensitivities (nothing major on the chemicals, thank goodness). Stool and urine samples taken which are being tested for many things including parasites, electrolyte balances, etc. My doc thinks that the palps are caused by the food allergy/intolerances. I also had developed over the years---acid reflux, chronic cystitis and bladder infections, asthma, IBS-C, allergic rhinitus, TMJ, and tinnitus came on about a year and a half ago, difficulty sleeping. Now I am having joint pains (knees, thumbs, hips, and my right foot) and hives. I guess I am asking, does this seem common to you? I REALLY want the heart palpitations to go away. I am doing most everything in your TEN steps. It's difficult now to exercise in the last week and a half because of the foot pain.
Also after the tinnitus started, I began having extreme anxiety, depression crying, stress. It has been a very difficult journey....

Yeah, everyone should already know that human has 2 brains...big one and small one...that's what I know, actually. But what happens in my gut feeds right back to my brain? I really wanna know more about this. Can you tell me?
