The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-start your metabolism...Posted on April 27th, 2007 |
Categories: Weight Loss | Nutrition | Inflammation | Detox
Last week some of you were disappointed.
Disappointed that I hadn't shared more details of precisely how the new 1-week health program that I've unveiled in the book, The UltraSimple Diet, actually works.
Looking back, I can see now how in my previous blogs leading up to last week's that I might've left that impression.
Well, I am back this week to make it up to you and come through! Although it's impossible to squeeze all 206-pages of my new book into a single blog, I'll give you the highlights so you can see in more detail just how it works.
I am actually overseas right now seeing patients in Israel, but was able to steal enough time away to get this blog to you, but unfortunately, not enough time to shoot the video version this week, so there is only this written version.
I will to take you through the program I have used exclusively with my patients who come from all over to find help for chronic problems. I often joke and say I am a resort doctor, the doctor of last resort. I also say I am "wholistic" doctor because I take care of patients with a "whole list" of problems.
The truth is that many suffer unnecessarily from problems that have solutions. You just don't hear about those solutions. This is the best kept secret in science and medicine.
The day before I left for Israel, in my medical practice, I spoke to a young man in his 40's who had suffered for years with terrible reflux, irritable bowel, asthma, and terrible "environmental" allergies.
He was on medication for reflux, cholesterol, multiple inhalers for allergies and asthma, decongestants and antihistamines just to get through the day.
I simply put him on The UltraSimple Diet - and not only did he throw away his reflux medication, never having another episode of heartburn or reflux, and all his asthma and allergy medication, and not only did his irritable bowel disappear, but he lost 10 pounds without even trying.
His energy is great and he is a totally different person, instead of being stuck on medications for the rest of his life, which didn't even help that much! He didn't realize there was another way to deal with his symptoms, or even to get to root of the problems.
Let me tell you the real secret of why I wrote my recent book, The UltraSimple Diet-it was NOT to help people lose weight.
It was to help people EXPERIENCE, often for the first time, what it is like to achieve a state of UltraWellness-lifelong health and vitality.
The UltraSimple Diet gives you the tools and information to get to the roots of illness and obesity.
The automatic side effect of dealing with the roots of illness is weight loss-without cravings or calorie, carb, or fat restriction.
I want to confess right up front-my goal is to help you realize that the chronic complaints you have come to accept as normal are NOT!
And in just 7 days you can experience a dramatic transformation in your health.
I encourage my patients to ask what they really want from life.
What do you want from your life? For your health and for your family?
Most people say:
-"I didn't realize how bad I was feeling until I started feeling so good."
My wish is for everyone to say:
-"I didn't know I could feel this good!"
So how does this work? And how did I learn about this type of healing?
As I reviewed in my last few blogs, The UltraSimple Diet addresses the roots of illness - and two very important ones are dealt with directly in the program - inflammation and toxicity.
But how did I learn this? Here are just a few things...
* I studied nutrition at Cornell University (among other things).
* I am Board certified in Family Medicine and trained at a University of California at San Francisco program.
* I have been personally inquiring into health for over 30 years through diet, yoga and studying detoxification.
* I am the former medical director of Canyon Ranch, one of the world's top health resorts where I worked with patients addressing inflammation and toxicity for nearly 10 years.
* I am the Founder and medical director of The UltraWellness Center as well as doing many things in teaching, academics and research.
* I am Editor-in-chief of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (www.alternative-therapies.com).
* I am on the faculty and board of directors at The Institute of Functional Medicine (www.functionalmedicine.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching principles and practice of this new medicine to doctors.
* And I am collaborating on research with Harvard Medical School in systems and functional medicine.
So as you can see I am busy enough.
Why, then, do I spend so much time trying to educate people about all this?
Well, it's because I know what it is like to be very sick - I suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for many years and learned from the inside out how to heal myself. I have also worked with thousands of very sick patients helping them heal.
What I share with you in The UltraSimple Diet are all the jewels I have learned that quickly and successfully help people heal and lose weight.
It works because it addresses the real causes of disease, the common roots of all illness.
It is based on the emerging science of systems biology and medicine -- Functional Medicine -- and fixes the basic systems of the body that underlie all functions by correcting imbalances that have previously lead to illness.
So how do YOU do it?
* Get rid of bad foods.
* Add good foods.
* Detoxify.
* Reduce inflammation.
* Relax.
* Reflect.
And here is what you DONT have to do:
* Go hungry
* Have cravings
* Eat gross foods
* Exercise too much
* Wait long for results
If you want to enhance the program even further, then you can try The Enhanced Program, which adds nutritional supplements, liver detoxification, gentle exercise, and stress reduction tools.
That's it really. It's simple.
Just eliminate the foods that create toxicity and inflammation and eat detoxifying and anti-inflammatory foods.
I reviewed the details in my recent blogs of what causes inflammation and toxicity and how to fix it, so I refer you back to those to read more because I want to get into the nitty gritty of how to do The UltraSimple Diet.
Before I tell you how to do it in more detail, I want you to know what you might experience in one week.
* Weight loss up to 10 pounds
* Improved digestion
* Relief from chronic health problems
* Better energy and mood
* Less congestion, allergies, joint pain, and fluid retention
* Better sleep and skin
And here are the health conditions that can improve with this approach.
* Arthritis
* Asthma and allergies
* Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
* Diabetes
* Food allergies
* Headaches
* Heart disease
* Irritable bowel and inflammatory bowel
* Autoimmune diseases
* Menstrual problems and menopause
* And many more!
OK, so let's review the nuts and bolts of the program.
There are two version of the program: The Basic Program and The Enhanced Program.
Here is The Basic Program:
* Get rid of bad foods and toxins - sugar, trans fat, HFCS, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine
* Add good foods - whole, unprocessed vegetables, fruit, beans, brown rice, fish, and chicken
* Avoid all potential food allergens - dairy, gluten, yeast, eggs, peanuts, corn, nightshades, and citrus
* Drink UltraShakes - a low allergy protein shake full of nutrients
* Drink UltraBroth - vegetable broth you can easily make by cooking up vegetables, spicing as you like, draining and saving the liquid and sipping on that throughout the day.
* Take UltraBaths - add Epsom salt, baking soda and lavender oil to your bath
* Reflection - write in you journal daily while you are on the program to reflect on how you are feeling, what things are changing, etc.
And here is The Enhanced Program (which is also pretty simple!), which is exactly the same as the Basic, only you add:
* Optimized liver detoxification with olive oil and lemon juice in the morning
* Nutritional supplements - Liver detoxification supportive herbs and nutrients, Vitamin C. Magnesium citrate, Probiotics and an Herbal laxative
* Rice protein to provide amino acids that help your body detoxify
* Flax seeds and flax oil for omega 3 fats
* Exercise-walking
* Active relaxation
So what does an average day look like on The UltraSimple Diet?
* Journaling upon waking
* Breakfast (Lemon juice and hot water, green tea, and UltraShake)
* Snack (UltraBroth, +/- UltraShake (if hungry))
* Lunch (2 cups vegetables, 1/2 cup brown rice, +/- UltraShake)
* Snack (UltraBroth, +/- UltraShake (if hungry))
* Dinner (2 cups vegetables, 1/2 cup brown rice, 4-6 ounces fish or chicken, or 1 cup of beans, 1 cup UltraBroth)
* Journaling before bed
* UltraBath
That's it - surprisingly simple, and effective. It is even hard for me to believe that such a simple change in diet and lifestyle could make such a difference in just 7 days, but it does. And I have seen it thousands of times.
And don't be fooled into thinking you'll be hungry: one of the most common comments I received when this program was being beta tested by over 100 people was that there was actually too much food and they didn't eat it all. There wasn't a single complaint that they were too hungry, only a few complaints that there was too MUCH food!
If you are dong The Enhanced Program there are a few other things to incorporate into your day:
* Lemon juice and olive oil
* Additional supplements - Vitamin C, probiotics, magnesium citrate, liver detoxification supportive herbs and nutrients
* Yoga
* Walking 30 minutes a day
* Sauna or steam bath 3 times a week
That's it!
So what do you do when you are done with the 1-week program?
Well, you have two options.
The first is to just keep going for 3 weeks - the benefits deepen and you can experience profound changes in your life and health.
The second option is to end the program, reintroduce foods, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
But just a quick warning about reintroducing potentially allergic foods. Go slow and be careful. Do it in two phases as I outline in the book.
This gives your body a chance to gradually adjust and to help you identify if there are a few foods that you should get rid of permanently, which you didn't know made you sick. Using the food re-introduction log is very important in this process.
As you might get by now, my true goal for all of you is to help you create UltraWellness, a state of deep and profound health, not just the absence of symptoms or disease.
You can go on from The UltraSimple Diet to make your new UltraMetabolism permanent. You can even transition to UltraMetabolism.
To get your own copy of The UltraSimple Diet, go to:

I am holding a special webinar on Sunday, May 6th, to get you jump-started on this program. Over 2,000 of you have already purchased the book through this special link above and will be attending this seminar. This special webinar is ONLY available through this special link.
I am very excited to personally help this initial group through the 7-days and I will be very active on our new UltraSimple website that I'll be unveiling just before then. This website will include nifty tools such as a health tracker, weight tracker, food log to record your reactions to food, a personal journal, message boards, your own blog even and more.
Now I'd like to hear from you:
Do you have any questions about The UltraSimple Diet?
Have you already been through it and if so, what have been your results?
If you have been through it already, do you have any tips for others to get the most out of it?

re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Hi,
I am wondering if it is safe to replace the chicken/fish with tofu or any other meat/fish substitute on the market.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Hello Mark,
Can you tell me how I can buy the diet book as a pdf download? Want to avoid the shipping cost, waiting for it to arrive, etc.
Also, I bought Ultrametabolism (3 books actually), read through part of it but never got started on it. The diet seems a good way to get a quick start.
Would appreciate your help and feedback.
Greetings from Brussels,
Gregor
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Now I'm confused. I had purchased the Ultrametabolism book and was learning about that and getting started. Now I have the Ultrasimple Diet. What do I do first? I have about 25 pounds to get rid of...
Please help! Thanks.
Michelle
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
For some reason the Green Tea first thing in the morning seems to cause nausea - any suggestions?
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I hope I can be added to the May 6 kick off where Dr. Hyman will be guiding people through the program.
I would also add........ for individual who are not using a Sauna. I think it is a must have. I have been using a friends for about a year and just recently purchase my own. An expense that I think is well worth it. I am off of antiflamatories for my herniate disk in lower back and cervical stenosis. And remain pretty much pain free.
Can't wait for Dr. Hyman's cookbook at end of the year! I hope that goes to press early too!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Is it possible for a vegetarian to use your program?
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Dr. Hyman,
I haven't had time to read your whole book yet, but I wonder about the UltraBath. Our water is so full of chlorine, and I don't have a filter for the shower or tub. Wouldn't we absorb to much chorine from our water taking this bath?
Thanks,
Cheryl
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Can a substitution be made for the lemon juice in the morning for someone whose migraines are triggered by citrus fruits?
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I bought the book 2 weeks ago in an airport, waited a week, did a preparation week and am starting the program on Sunday, April 27.
I am already a huge fan just from cutting out sugar, bread, and potatoes! I want to have huge success on the program too.
Please send/direct me to the checklists and nutritional info NOW so I can print out today before doing the program!
I want to do the enhanced program but there's no detailed info in the book on Liver detoxification supportive herbs and nutrients, Vitamin C, Magnesium citrate, Probiotics or an Herbal laxative.
Lemons and olive oil I can manage!
Thanks! Please help soon!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
While I think the book is good, there are a LOT of references to material that will be available online. I'm just disappointed that I bought the book in the stores, and have been waiting a month for the online guide to appear.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Hi Dr. Hyman,
Thank you so much for your ultrasimple diet (and your other books - I have all your "ultra" books)! I have already gone through the 7-day plan. I'm two weeks out and am in the re-introduction phase now - next week I start re-introducing the different food groups starting with corn.
Actually I didn't see much of an improvement on the little things on the quiz (I still have post nasal drip, for instance - however, I live in the #1 city in the U.S. for environmental allergies!; I also still have urinary urgency, but I have had this all my life). Things like that did not change after this diet, and I didn't lose weight (didn't need or want to though). However, I really do feel cleaner and healthier after the diet - I think I read that comment from someone else, and it really is true.
I decided to try this diet for several reasons: the first was to detox after chemo (I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago and am well now, as far as I know!), to find out if I am allergic to anything, and to just start a healthy, whole foods diet. I ate pretty healthy before and really didn't eat much processed food, but now I really have cut it all out, and I feel really good! I must admit, I do miss ice cream, pizza and chocolate! I don't have "cravings" for them though, and am totally satisfied with the foods on the diet...I just miss them. :-)
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I used to go to a local gym that had a sauna. Then I was able to purchase a used "Smarty" from someone. It's an infrared "cocoon" thing. Expensive, but I'll use it for the rest of my life.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I have only been on the Ultra Simple Diet for 4 days, and I have lost 5 lbs., 4" in my waist. More importantly, I feel fantastic. My depression, brain fog & sleeplessness, which have affected me for years, disappeared. I feel energetic, and clear. This is a life changing program. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr.Mark.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I bought your new book on amazon and feel I should be sent the info for the web seminar on May 6th
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Yes...see pages 123 and 124. There is a chart. If you don't understand what it means ask at any store like Vitamin Shoppe.

Dr. Hyman
Your rule "Get rid of bad foods and toxins - sugar, transfats, HFCS..." is basically the motto of our school, a small private PreK to 8th grade school, with 30 students, in Raleigh, NC. Many visitors come to our school and say it's "sad" that we don't give kids candy - not even at Halloween. Many parents who enroll their children for other reasons (we have a very low student/teacher ratio), try to sneak sweets into their kids lunches.
I wonder if you would be willing to support our school, and maybe mention it in your literature. I would love to see hundreds of schools like this open up around the country. We started the elementary school with only four students, four years ago. My message to parents is "Just Say No!" (to junk food). Someone needs to tell parents, "You can do it". Too many parents watch the public schools malnourish their children, standing by helplessly. It is indeed difficult to change a huge institution like a public school system, but it is relatively easy to open a school.

I have to agree. And now it appears that there is a webinar that I'm not eligible for because I bought my copy of ultrasimple from a bookstore? That doesn't seem fair. The guide page was promised yesterday but it still not live.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I'm with you! Although it appears I was wrong about not having the nutritional supplement info, I was hoping for the printable checklists to help me stay on track.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
A friend has been a vegetarian for years and is very knowledgeable about foods. He says that, although it seems contrary to the principle of eating whole grains, white rice is more easily digested than brown rice and is preferable to brown rice. Just something you may want to consider.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Much better blog. I am actually more interested now in getting the book. I like getting these blogs in my email every week, even if it is an abbreviated version of what's already in a book. Mostly it helps me remember to make healthy choices. It's a bit of an inspiration every week, particularly the blogs that give examples of patients who greatly improved. I no longer drink or eat anything with high fructose corn syrup, already have to be gluten free, and am trying to make healthier decisions with food.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I have had my gallbladder removed so will the lemon juice and olive oil do me any good?
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Feeling bloated, fatigued! blood work revealed still high cholesterol and HIGH thyroid. I purchased your book, thinking it would be my dream come true. Now I read that if I have high thyroid, if I've had diverticulitis I shouldn't do it. I've never been sick in my life until last JUne! I don't knit! Sinking Fast! Carolyn
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I received your book, "UltraMetabolism" as a gift. (How lucky am I that someone cares about me that much!) I did, just received it and haven't started to read it yet, but I am excited to get started on it. Especially after reading your bolg today that explained it in a little more detail. I will be keeping a detailed log and I'm looking forward to wonderful results. Thank you.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Gosh! I'd like to get in on the webinar as well! Is there any possibility???
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I wrote a letter to the lady that answered the phone - Christine last night. 4-27-2007. I really need your help. The people here that practice functional meds can NOT answer my query as I was born WITHOUT A GALLBLADDER and have a lot of pain now.I cited specific questions as to "Fat Tolerance" etc in my post to you.
Please track down my letter and HELP me.
Sincere thanks,

re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Dr. Hyman,
I have bought your book, The Ultrametabolism and I really do have a problem with finding things to eat. I started out back in May 2006 and so far have lost 51 pounds. I changed the way I eat. Mostly fruits and vegtables. My main meat is Chicken. Usually don't have side dishes, except for veggies. My problem is the beans. I like them, but you say not to eat anything with a label. The beans I buy are canned because I don't have time for the beans to soak when I need them. I have also added almonds to my diet. Only about 15 a day. My other problem is that I like quick foods because when the hunger hits, I'm done. So I buy Bocca Burgers and Bocca chicken patties. They are great and usally keep me satisfied. I have never felt better since I changed what I eat. I do have some other processed foods, but with in moderation. In August 2006 I added exercise. Except for the last few weeks, I've added 5 classes every week. Yoga and step on Monday, Pliates on Tues and 2 kickboxing classes on Wed. These classes have helped tremendously. Since I haven't been in the past few weeks, it's going to be hard getting back into it, but I'm game at this point. I'm only 5' 157 pounds. My goal is 130, but I carry most of weight in my legs and butt, so the gym is the way to go.
Thanks again for all your insight. It really has helped me to get this far.
Regards,
Deb

In Ultrametabolism you restrict cous cous (whole wheat), is it OK to eat the white cous cous?
Also why is stevia restricted?

How can I contact you while you're in Israel?

re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
My husband recently started a semiliar diet or lifestyle change is the way the put it.He only ate natural foods.I mean literaly thats it he lost 47pds his hair started to grow back his IBS symptons simply went away. He added Chicken to his diet and fish.Some of his symptoms came back.He took them away and the symptoms went away,this diet explains how animal protein is bad for you and my husband is proof that this true.He still eats chicken and fish and a little junk food every now and then.So I know the diet that you are talking about does work and he feels a lot better.So I say if you can go all natural it really works.I tried his diet but I am way to hooked on all the junk they put in our foods.I had a headache for 5 days I finally had to cave and have my coffee my headache went away and the rest is history.Well good luck all hope you stick with it and pray for me because IM starting again and this time IM ready Im slowly taking caffine out of my diet lol I hope I dont kill anyone just joking.But IM really excited about it and cant wait to feel better and look better.I hope we all make it.Once again good luck.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Hello- I have been reading a lot online, and listened to radio interviews with Dr. H, and am ready to start this program immediately! However, I live out of the country and shipping books takes a LONG time and import is expensive. While I am waiting for the book, I would still like to start the 7 day program (and perhaps continue it).
A few questions:
1) What is in the Ultra Shake? Is this a pre-packaged product or something I can make? I have rice protein powder and can get other items...
2) can Quinoa be substituted for the brown rice? Or a combination?
3) If someone is already an exerciser, can they continue their normal level during this week or should they tone it down and just do the walking/yoga?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY! It will be MOST helpful to me, ezpecially being so far from US mail/phones. Thanks.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
HI Carolyn,
my personal opinion is that this diet is simply a kick start to get you to eat health food.
However, since you are doing a special diet without the direction of doctor, special cases cannot just do it by yourself.
Have a doctor check you up and look over this plan and ask directions. You may still be able to do it.
However, in my opinion, simply following the philosophy of cutting out what Dr. Hyman mentioned and eat whole food WILL do you good. This plan is for people who find eating healthy too confusing and need some where to start with
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Hi Deb,
I believe in Ultrasimple Diet I read that canned beans are actually okay. In fact, the shopping list included 4 "cans" of choice of 3 different type of beans.
However, the book did mention that you have to WASH IT WELL before using them.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
One more question:
Does anyone know how much, each, of Olive Oil & lemon juice one is to take in the mornings?
THANKS.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I suffer from Bipolar disorder. I am on 37.5 mg of Effexor and 900 mg of Lithium a day. I have gained a lot of weight from these medications and need to loose 30lbs. Is you program safe for me to do?
Thanks for your response.

re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I am 39 and have spent many years trying different things and looking for answers to various health ailments...fatigue, depression, allergies, acne, digestion, etc. etc., etc.
I have a few questions...Are the blood tests they do for food allergies accurate??? Is it true that if you eat a certain food often enough even though you are not allergic to it, the blood tests may show that you are allergic??????....
I had a blood test about 20 years ago (they may be quite different now????)...It showed I was allergic to watermelon, chocolate, pepper and cod fish....I am open to getting another test if is recommended and would be helpful in narrowing down which foods are best for me....
BLOOD SUGAR
I also have low blood sugar and need to eat often... need lots of protein too.... I eat a lot of eggs, cheese and yogurt which isn't on the one week diet....beans and brown rice sedate me and I didn't think they were so great for me, yet they are on the one week diet?????I also drink coffee or expresso with a lot of cream (to counter a blood sugar reaction)Why do you believe caffeine to be bad????
I am getting to the point where I am tired of trying....You do one thing thinking it is good...then you hear it is bad....so you change ...then you hear that is bad....Etc. , Etc.
I know that processed foods are bad as they affect my breathing...I believe the more natural the food the better it is...I am unsure about eliminating some of the natural foods that you suggested to eliminate as they are a main staple for me....This is why I really want to know how accurate are the current blood alllergy tests if I were to take one....
I also want to start having kids within the next few years (Again just turned 39) and want to have optimal health without meds....
Thank you very much for listening, Diana :)
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Diana- you need to get your endocrine system looked at. Get a FULL thyroid panel, not just TSH. Also do a morning and afternoon cortisol to look at adrenals. Most hypothyroid is either borderline or sub-clinical (falls within the "normal" range from the labs) and not addressed by doctors (who usually will instead prescribe antidepressants, etc., which cause a host of other problems, not to mention make the underlying problem worse), or they are mis-treated - by giving synthroid only. Find a doctor who knows about natural hormones, will prescribe bioidentical hormones or Armour Thyroid, and if your Doctor wont do this find another one who will, period. Push hard, find what you need, and you will get better. Check out books by Drs. Shames & Mary Shomon. ALso see thyroidpower .com and you can order tests from canaryclub. org Good luck. Dont give up!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I began the enhanced program this morning and on the whole am happy so far. Any advice for reducing queasiness brought on (I think) by taking so many supplements in the morning? Typically I have a cast-iron stomach and absolutely no digestive complaints, and I drank the green tea just fine on the preparation week, during which I lost five pounds and my energy and outlook improved. Hooray!
Regarding the supplements, on p. 124 the line I was thinking of was "...the UltraSimple Companion Guide will help you pick high-quality products." Instead of Dr. Hyman, I had to rely on the teenagers at the whole foods market. It was a lot of money to spend without having a feeling of certainty that I was picking up what was intended (particularly the liver supportive herbs). Also, finding the Magnesium Citrate was quite difficult, even GNC did not have it.
About the guide, the Web site says April 26, the e-mail says April 4, that guide really needs to get up there or at least correct the info on the site and in the e-mail so people are less frustrated!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
The enhanced plan specifies 2 Tbsp. organic extra virgin olive oil and the juice of 1/2 an organic lemon, taken upon waking.
My morning "cocktail" fit in a shot glass and was "enjoyed" as a shot!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Thank you, Brenda, for those details!!
Any info on the UltrShake? Again, I can not find on the webiste or blog if this is a store-bought product (I know that Alive! makes something of a similar name, but no idea if that is what Dr. H is suggesting) or if it is something I can mix at home with my rice protein powder.
I can't wait until that book comes... it does take awhile to ship here.
Thank you!
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
Elisabet,
I, too, was on Effexor; however, after changing the way that I eat, I have found that diet alone affected my mood "disorder" more than an "effor deficiency".
Your case may be different, but I can't possibly see how eating more vegetables and whole foods would be detrimental to your physical or mental health.

re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
The most important info for you if you are eager to get started and are waiting for the book is probably that there is a "preparation week" before actually starting the program. This calls for cutting out high fructose corn syrup; caffeine (on a gradual schedule, by 1/2 each day); alcohol; white bread, rice and potatoes and perhaps one more thing? Also take 1000-2000 Vitamin C. THEN the program begins.
The shake is something you make at home, there are three versions. The first option does use rice protein powder, along with ground flax seeds, a particular oil, a specified amount of non-citrus fruit, filtered water, ice made w/ filtered water and optional either nut butter or soaked nuts (supposed to make it taste better).
Best to wait for the book for the program, in my opinion, all the specifics are in there. But you can always start the prep week while you wait! And obtain the means to filter water if you don't have that already.

thank you, Brenda. I REALLY appreciate your reply, very helpful. I think I have been on the "prep week" for years now, except for the caffeine. I do love my coffee.. But i've been 2 days with none, just green tea in the morning, and doing ok... (not loving it, but willing to give it a go!) Amazing though how just cutting those things out makes a difference. I used to have terrible IBS and when I cut that junk out, and added pro-biotics, guess what... GONE. No drugs, not even anything over the counter... just dietary changes. But I'm ready to go the extra mile, as I assume many of us readers are. I thank you again for your help. :)

Dr. Hyman, I already purchased your Ultraslim Diet book from a local retailer without knowing that it is a new program, and I came online today to find and print out the Toxicity & Inflammation Quiz. I wasn't able to find this- perhaps the site is not up yet? Also, I would like to have access to the webinar on Sunday May 6- can you please let me know how to do that?
Thanks! Jennifer

Diana-
If you're having low blood sugar you should not be drinking espresso/coffee because it is causing you to make too much adrenaline which will cause low blood sugar. If you can't get off the caffeine at least switch to decaf. After making this simple switch I lost 5 lbs without dieting.
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I have just started last weekend and now in day 4. However, as I pour over the material and the plan over and over again, I am getting concerned that the Ultrasimple Diet is just another calorie restrictive diet for a week. Since most of the diet is on vegetable and rice, it seems the daily calorie intake is not enough for the minimum recommanded by US gov for my age.
The reason I say that is because I have slightly low blood pressure (runs in the family) and ever since I am on this diet, I find myself getting dizzy more and more often when I change position (from sitting to standing...etc) I usually interpret this as not enough sugar in my bloodstream. It is a little bit harder to carry on regular activities right now (especially I swim for 1 hr 4 nights a week).
Just to track day to day progress, i find that I have lost 4lb in the first day (probably water weight), 0.5lb second day, 0.0lb third day.
I'll see through the 7 days because I made a committment, but it's not as easy a ride as it describes. (I am actually pretty hungry right now. :))

I have Ultrametabolism and Ultrasimple Diet. What bothers me is the recommendations of using soy. Soy is a proven goitrogen. For those of us that are hypothyroid unfermented soy is counterproductive. Fermented soy products in moderation are fine, because fermentation takes care of that aspect, but unfermented soy is bad news for hypothyroid people. I am wondering why on earth you would recommend soy when so much of the US population is either undiagnosed or undertreated hypothyroid! This puzzles me. You seem to know your stuff, but recommending soy as part of any diet strikes me as ill-conceived as it will be counter productive with this protocol.

Brenda, very high quality vitamins can be purchased at the Life Extension Foundation (lef.org). If you become a member ($75/year), you get discounts. Generally they're cheaper (if you buy four bottles) than purchasing at Whole Foods or elsewhere. As part of the membership, they have emails with new research findings and product promotions. That's where I first heard of UltraMetabolism. Good luck!

Where can I find the Ultra Shakes and Ultra Broth?
re: The UltraSimple Diet: A more detailed look at how to kick-
I bought both the books ultrasimple diet and ultra metabolism. I plan to use the diet book first which claims to help one loose upto 10 pounds in 7 days. And after that I plan to follow ultra metabolism to maintain my weight.

I purchased a filter for my shower head at Lowes, it was about $30.00, and woth every penny. I love taking baths, and I still can, I just put the plug in the bath, and let the shower fill it up. I too have way, way too much chlorine in my water.
