Faithful first week yields no weight loss but definite insomnia

I've been absolutely faithful during my first week in the detox phase. I went cold turkey; started supplements that seemed to be the best fit for my symptoms AND changed my diet completely from the start. Lost three pounds in four days (yay!) but after seven days had regained the three pounds lost for even-steven from when I started. What gives?

Remember - this isn't a diet but a long-term way of life. Pat yourself on the back for making the changes and maybe don't weigh yourself so much. Focus on adding the great foods and trying recipes in Dr. Hyman's books, plus the exercises and other things he advocates, and enjoy the life changes; the weight - and better health - will surely follow.
Agreed. There are so many

Agreed. There are so many factors that can cause fluctuations in weight -- water retention being a big one. Was your salt intake high? Are you experiencing PMS? I know these things make a big difference on the scale for me. Although sometimes hard (it's nice to see the numbers), I try to limit weighings to once a week - twice at most. Hang in there!
Make light of weighing.

Agreeing with the others, the numbers on the scale are deceptive. Even the amount of stool in your lower gut can influence your "weight". I always weigh myself first thing in the morning, after an enema
, so it's only done once (max. twice) a week. I've been known to "gain" 3 lbs (of water!) by eating a salty meal the night before, or when Aunt Flo visits. Don't take the numbers too seriously, look for the overall tendency of the graph over weeks. I once got so frustrated with my scale for lying to me, I took a hammer to it! I'm better now though, I even get accompanied passes on weekends.
any chance you have thyroid problems?

You have described my classic response to diets. Even though I have been faithfully working at it, including exercise, I have lost no weight since January. I have lost 2 sizes because of the strength building routines I've done that have increased muscle and decreased fat, but not a single pound is gone. I believe that is mostly due to my thyroid, even though I'm taking armour thyroid replacement. A low functioning thyroid will cause your metabolism to quickly adjust against any weight loss. The metabolism slows to compensate for the decrease in calories. At least that's my experience. I have no idea if this is possibly your issue. there is a good chapter in the ultra metabolism book specifically about thyroid stuff.
funny you mention insomnia. My first day on the diet I was up till after midnight (nearly unheard of for me) and did not sleep well throughout the night. I tried QiGong because I happened to have a DVD I hadn't tried; relaxation breathing, reading. it was a bummer! I am going to take valerian root tonight and see if that helps.

I always had problems sleeping, since I started using melatonin I not only sleep better but have a better sleep cycle. At one time I switched to valerian root, but did not feel that it helped much at all. Just thought I would put that out there.
To the last person, wow, 2 dress sizes is something to celebrate, unfortunately we are all programed to focus on the scales. However, I do think you should have success with Dr Hymans programs. I hope you are reading the Ultrametabolism book, because he has a chapter dedicated to thyroid. You can use those suggestions in combination with the USD. Good luck to you.
thanks for your great support

I really appreciate everyone's comments. it's helpful to know I'm not alone.
I've read the book thoroughly (some parts of it two or three times!). I'm waiting for thyroid tests to come back this week, though they have always been normal in the past (I realize, however, that can still be deceptive). I am also awaiting the results of an Organic Acids Test. Preliminary diagnosis by my doctor was an intestinal yeast imbalance. If that proves true, I will start an antibiotic to kill the bacteria.
I'm doing much better overall after the second week. I feel great and am sleeping better (re-arranged some of the supplements which helped). Went to a birthday party and baseball game last night and was VERY FAITHFUL to the diet. It was hard, but I did it and I'm proud of myself. We'll see what he scale says tomorrow.
