strange, sick symptoms after each shake--please help

I just finished week 1 of the USD. I loved it. My prep week was harder than the USD since I could easily follow the directions that were in the book and the online supplement.

My first week, I was so energetic. I lost about 7 pounds. I was totally excited. I decided to continue for three weeks.

This week, every morning I have my shake. For the rest of the day, I feel like I'm coming down with a cold. My throat starts to hurt, my ears and nose get stuffy. My eyes feel heavy. I feel like I need a nap. This weekend, I slept and slept. By evening, I feel somewhat better.

I haven't eaten anything off the USD and I've been taking supplements. I feel pretty awful right now. I'm going to try not having a shake tomorrow but I'm really curious what might be going on. (I work alone and haven't been around anyone with a cold.)

Thanks for your help! (I'm continuing with USD, just cutting out the fruit for a few days.)

I slept for a few hours and woke up hungry. I felt so much better. No head or nose congestion. No sore throat.

I had some broth with veggies. Before finishing the bowl, my head, nose and both ears are stuffy again. I'm hesitant to eat more broth but I'm hungry.

Please send suggestions/success stories.

It does sound like you may be having an allergic reaction to something. Try reviewing all of the different ingredients that you have consumed for the days you have had these symptoms. You may need to get even more basic in the elimination process to find the offensive food.

You might also check you supplements to make sure they are gluten and yeast free. I found after the first week I am very sensitive to foods that never bothered me before, so be very specific in reviewing what you ingest.

Thanks so much for your reply. I came to the same conclusion. So a couple of days ago, I didn't make a shake. I ate a little bit of the ingredients spread out over time--some berries in the morning, with to see how I fell, some almonds late in the day. I really thought it would turn out to be either the strawberries or the almonds. Neither resulted in a reaction. I made a shake this am and everything was fine. I think it may have been just a touch of something that was in/on one of the ingredients.

I've felt much better over the last day and a half, back to normal. But I'm definitely tracking to try to help be able to narrow down the possibilities if there are issues in the future.

Hi Karen -- I hope you've got the problem worked out now.  I agree with the previous comment about checking your supplements for common allergens like wheat and dairy.  Also, are you using soy milk, and if so, did you check that there is no wheat or dairy in that?  As paradoxical as it seems, some companies have MILK in their SOY milk - crazy!

I also felt like crud for the first few days of detox (and as you know, I fell off the wagon so had to go through those same few tough detox days all over again) - headaches, gassy, dry-feeling throat.  Plus, I think seasonal allergies are starting to come up now, so that's probably not helping.

I'm happy to say that I'm almost fully back on track now and lost the couple of pounds I put on when off the wagon.  It's good to hear about other people's strength and success with the program - very encouraging.

Hi Karen,

    Just wondering if discontinuing the shake did help resolve your symptoms?  It is possible that you are having some type of reaction to an ingredient in the shake..   I would encourage you to keep a journal while you are doing this as if it is food related, that is the tried and true method to figure out what is going on.

    I am hoping that you are feeling much better by now!

I think I figured out what it was. I discontinued individual ingredients. I think it was the banana. When I eat a banana, I sometimes end up stuffy afterwards. I think I must have been having at least half of one each day in my shakes. Without the banana, I'm feeling better.
