Cups and inches

Hi there, I'm new on the program, started today, but i have a little problem: I live in Europe, the Netherlands, and I'm not used to cups and inches and so on, can anyone help me and tell me how much grams a cup is? Like in a cup  of tofu of a cup of milk?

My measuring cup is labeled in cups and ml. When I type "1 cup in ml" using Google, it returns "1 US cup = 236.588237 ml".  However, typing in "1 cup in grams" just returns a bunch links because a "cup" is volume while a "gram" is mass.

Typing "1 oz in grams" returns "1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams"

Typing "1 fl oz in ml" returns "1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735296 ml"

So, try Google for direct results, or to find conversion charts or conversion factors.  Meanwhile, I'll work on converting Americans to the metric system.  Tongue out

Yeah, I did google it and

Yeah, I did google it and found converting websites, so I know it's approx. 240 ml, but can you explain how to use it in: a cup of basil, for instance, do they mean a cup packed with basil or a cup loosely filled with basil? Packed basil can be 4 or 5 times as much as loose basil.

Or in a cup of red bell pepper? Do they mean a chunk of red bell pepper that fills up the cup or is it a cup of finely chopped red bell pepper? One chunk fits in one cup but cut into small pieces one cup can contain two red bell peppers Frown

Thanks for converting America, please ask them to do it right away !! Laughing

Thanks for your help!

Ah, good question.  There are guides for that as well. Look at this: http://www.bettycrocker.com/how-to/charts-and-guides/General-Charts/Common-Ingredients-Yields-Equivalents.htm

I would expect it to say, for example, "One medium onion, diced."  Or, "One cup of diced onion."  In the second case, you would add diced onion to the measuring cup until reaches the indicated measurement without trying to pack it tight.  Just imagine scooping a cup full of diced onion from a large bowl full of diced onion.  It would just sit naturally in the cup.

Now, if the recipe called for something like 1 cup of brown sugar, tightly packed, that you would press into the measuring cup and continue topping off until it reaches the indicated measurement.

Is cooking really that different in other countries?  I managed to cook in England. Granted, I didn't use a lot of fresh ingredients. hehe

Thanks for that Betty

Thanks for that Betty Crocker website, that gives me a good idea how cups 'work'. When I asked this question I was starting my first week and I didn't know how to do it: I did it the way you discribe it and used my common sense, adapted it to my taste and ate well. I lost 9 pounds already in 4 weeks so I quess I did something right. But now I will do it a little more precise, with your guide.

England needs to be converted too, they use weird measurement like stone and pints and gallons and bushels! I'm Dutch and raised with meters and liters and grams.

I'm glad you were able to work with the antiquated measurement system. But what if you find out that you were just eating much less due to the estimated measurements?!  hehe

I'm curious about how tall you are.

(I wanted to visit the Netherlands, but not Amsterdam. My wife wanted Amsterdam. We ended up not going at all though.)

Haha, eating much less is

Haha, eating much less is nót what I did: Before I started this whole UltraLife, I ate almost nothing and I still gained weight, now I eat all day and a lot too and I lose weight!! It's amazing, really. I'm 1.64 meter and I'm not telling how much inches stones or yards that is. :)

If you come to the Netherlands, visit Amsterdam for one day and than leave it as fast as you can and go to Leiden or Maastricht or see the country side, that's much nicer. Rent a bike or a scooter and see the real country instead of the tourists scenes.

I read a book called, "The Snack Factor Diet"  It basically says that you should keep your metabolism running by never allowing yourself to become too hungry or empty.  Have a couple fairly healthy snacks during the day.  It works. It's what my sister describes as "grazing."

Ah, 1.64m is what we would call 5 foot 4 and a half. The "4 and a half"
being inches.  To keep it simple you could write 5'4" or 5'5". I
thought you might be 2m tall based on what I've heard about the country.  hehe

Yeah, I wanted to visit places on bikes.  It might have been the wrong time of year though.  And I didn't know where to go.  I just knew I didn't want to be in common tourist areas.

Now that was exactly my

Now that was exactly my problem and that's why I liked this USD from the start: my metabolism was below zero and I gained weight just by looking at something eatable.

You're right about the Dutch: they are pretty tall, but unfortunately i'm not. My 10 year old son is almost as tall as me, he'll probably be 1.95 meter (6'5''?!?), and a lot of children are like him.

If you come in the winter, rent some ice-skates and go ice skating indoor, or when it's freezing long enough, skate on the canals and ditches. In the summer, go to the dunes and beaches near Katwijk or Scheveningen. Or the cheesemarket in Alkmaar, the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam, visit the Rijksmuseum while your there or drive to the other site of the country in 1,5 hour and see the Veluwe, a beautiful nature area where you can get a free bike and enjoy the nature and the Kröller-Müller Museum.

I sound like a touristoperator don't I?
