I have been overweight for about the last 11 years. I seemed to pack it on after my first child.

I'm probably 60 pounds overweight. I'm 46. Just in this last half year, my ankles have started hurting and swelling up. This happens especially if I'm sitting for long periods of time at the computer or driving for awhile. Then I've also had a deep pain in my leg on and off. Sometimes it's a burning sensation. It will last maybe and hour and then subside. My ankles are more of the problem. My legs have always been very sensitive to touch. It hurts if someone tries to massage them. They are also very stiff if I've been sitting for a long period. I don't have many vericose veins and certainly nothing that buldges. Seems like edema fits it the closest when I look up symptoms on the internet. I'm on 20 mgs of simvisatin now. I just bought your ultra-matab book and getting myself phsyed up to redo me. Please advise.

This is a concern

Hello sweetooth,

I'm a fellow Ultrametabolizer from Canada, and thought since I have a nursing background, I'd reply.  (Sounded like you might be asking Dr. Hyman? - I'm new and not sure that he replies here).

My first thought, was:  ....has she seen a Doctor about this?  I don't mean to alarm, but Dependent edema of the legs can indicate serious business, especially when accompanied by deep pain and burning, even sporadically.  In my personal opinion, you should try to have a complete physical examination, if you haven't already, since your symptoms began.  Tests will probably be needed to rule out problems with your heart, lungs, blood, blood vessels, lymphatic system, infection, or other.  Now, while I truly believe Ultrametabolism is a crucial key to restoring balances so your body works like it was meant to, symptoms like you describe shouldn't wait for success with lowering your weight.  I'm sure it will help, but the road to wellness is a journey, not a quick fix, and if I had your symptoms, I wouldn't wait.

I have poor circulation in my legs too and I'm 75 pounds heavier than I need to be, and I too get edema, and sometimes numbness when I've been on my feet or sitting too long in the wrong position.  I do NOT however get deep pains, but am certain that if I did, I'd be seeing my family doctor within a day or two, or go to an Emergency dept if the pain didn't resolve in your usual hour.

In ending, I'm hoping you will take your symptoms seriously, and seek medical attention asap.  (Also, advise against massaging while having these pains!)  Good luck and don't procrastinate - like me.

Lisa.

P.S. Once I got this typed, I wanted to send it in a private message, but couldn't copy it, so it's public.

While I certainly agree with the previous response, you might also consult a chiropractor. I have been having sever pain in my back, radiating down through my feet with edema and many presure points are very painful when I massage them. Since I have been seeing many MD's right now and most of my general health test have been fine, I went to a chiropractor yesterday. Wow, relief! All of my pain is not gone but last night I finally could rest and fall to sleep with out struggling through the pain. This morning I am a little sore, which is normal after an adjustment, but my feet and ankles were not as painful when I stepped out of bed.

Most insurance companies cover this care without a refferal or they can offer a reduced rate for persons without insurance, and they can usually fit you in within a day or two.  When I screened for this chiropractor I sought someone who is familiar with nutrition and supplements and used these treatments as part of their care program. I lucked out and my new doctor actually has a bachelors degree in nutrition. If you have never sought chiropractic care I highly recommend it, it can help with other medical issues too.
