Only lost 1 lb in 5 days on ultrasimple diet....HELP!

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

I started the ultrasimple diet on Monday and now it's Friday and I've only lost 1 lb.

I am following the diet step by step. I feel hungry. I cut caffeine but what's the deal with only losing one pound?

Has anyone else experienced this? I hear all of the stories of people dropping pounds fast within 7 days but it doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm definitely detoxing though...felt like I had the flu, complextion flare ups, etc.

I wonder if its the type of ultrashake I'm making every day with the almond milk (version 3).

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm thinking it could be

I'm thinking it could be many things. One of the first that comes to mind is, when you start to dump toxins sometimes there is a 40 car pile-up on the express-lane and traffic can't flow (a nice way to say you get constipated). Once I started the program I was going several times a day. I found when I didn't get enough water, things started to back up a bit though. So make sure you aren't constipated and you are getting lots of water. I would venture to say that if a normal healthy intake of water is eight 8 oz glasses, you should at least double that if you are detoxifying (I drink a lot more so I don't pay attention to how much is recommended). And follow his recommendations in the book for constipation.

The fact that you are hungry is another flag to me. You aren't supposed to be hungry on this program and if you are, your body could be going into starvation mode and hanging on to every spare calorie it gets. There are no limits on amounts, so eat more veggies! If 2 cups doesn't satisfy go to 3 or 4. Also you can have more broth and more shakes. Take advantage of that and help yourself get satisfied.

The other thing it could be is an allergy. Perhaps you are allergic to something you are eating on a daily basis and are still inflammed. Almond milk could be the culprit, or the nut butter. An allergic reaction could cause you to feel like you had the flu and give you complexion flareups too.

The last thing I can think of is that perhaps there is more going on in your body than you are aware of. When I read Ultrametabolism and took the self tests... my scores were all in the range of "please seek medical advice". I was another one of Dr. Hyman's (as he says in UM) "whole-listic" patients. I had a whole list of issues and I was unable to move forward until I got some help.

Some things for you to consider. :) Others may have more to offer.

Eat more

If you are not eating enough your body could be storing those calories, so you may need to eat more. Are you having the extra shakes that are allowed? There really is no reason to be actually hungry, since there is no restriction on the amount of food just the type. However, you may be craving the extra carbs and sweets your body is missing. Try having snacks that are a little more substantial, like a half an apple or celery dipped in nut butter. Since "tooth" hunger is somethimes really just thirst, try drinking more water.

With that said, the weight loss on this plan varies. Often if you are fairly close to your optimal body weight you won't lose as much, and if there are other medical issues they can affect weight loss too. Don't give up. You should notice some other valuable health benefits, especially if you go into the second week, even if you weight loss is at a slower rate

Thanks for the feedback!

Okay let's see....

Everything is flowing just fine so that isn't the issue.

I didn't think I was allergic to almonds in the past but that is the only thing I'm eating, besides the flax, that I don't eat a whole lot of in my everyday life.

Maybe it is all the detoxing in this week. I really am experiencing funny things that I'm attributing to detoxing like the first few days, I was lightheaded and felt like someone laid a heavy blanket over my head(probably coffee detoxing) and then the last 2 days I have had a funny ring in my ears and some muscle twitches just to name a few things.

I do need to lose at least 10-15 pounds and maybe in week 2 that will start to happen.

Also, I've been exercising lightly at the gym...just 30 minutes on the bike or elyptical trainer and abs. But not strenuous. My mom said maybe I shouldn't be exercising in the detox phase but I thought Dr. Hyman actually recommended it.

Question: How long should I stay on the ultra simple diet especially if I don't see good weight loss results within 7 days. Is there a suggested limit?

thanks for your help and support!

one more thing...I feel like I'm eating alot at the suggested amounts and could try to eat more veggies but man! That would be a lot of food and I'm afraid to add more on top of the suggested amounts if I'm not losing already!

Maybe I should eat every 1.5 hours verus 2 - 2.5 .

Also on Day 5

I'm on Day 5, too. I've lost a little more than you have - 1.4 pounds. I'd like to be losing faster but that's really about what I expected. My usual diet is fairly similar to the Ultrametabolism diet except that I eat gluten, dairy, etc. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and whole grains and avoid junk fods (except unfortunately Diet Coke) and sugar so it hasn't been a huge change. I've been on a supplement regimen similar to what he recommends, including the omega-3 and probiotics. I've been practicing yoga regularly for 4 years and I do a lot of walking. I was losing 1-2 pounds a month so 1.4 pounds in 5 days doesn't seem as slow to me as it would to many people.

I have a digital scale that also measures per cent body fat. I've been happy that although I haven't lost a lot of weight, my per cent body fat is dropping. I haven't had any major change in how I'm feeling - at least nothing I can clearly distinguish from the usual ups and downs.

I'm going to do one more week of Ultrasimple and then make the transition to Ultrametabolism. I'm curious to see what the next few days and weeks will bring.

I hope you start losing more quickly and feel better soon.

Frances

After Day 7

I just did my Day 7 measurements. I've lost 2 pounds. I also lost one inch around my waist and a half inch around my hips. It would have been nice to have been one of the people who lost 8-10 pounds but 2 pounds is porgress. I haven't noticed any major differences in how I feel. I'm going to do another week of UltraSimple and then transition to UltraMetabolism.

How are you doing?

Frances

Good news!

Well, I weighted this morning and after 7 days on the Ultra Simple Diet, I am happy to say I lost 6 lbs. I need to measure too but I can tell I've lost weight in my hips and waist as my jeans fit better!

I think I started just torching fat over the weekend. So it took my body about 4-5 days to adjust to the diet. I definitely had the leaky gut thing going on so my system probably needed a week to clean out and get realigned.

I also feel much better today! Best I've felt since starting the diet 8 days ago! Coffee was the biggest things and cutting out a few beers or glasses of wine a night was a very close second.

Like Frances, I am vegetarian so the diet part isn't much off how I normally eat except that I did eat a lot of cheese, cow yogurt and cottage cheese for protein in addition to tofu, eggs, tempeh and beans.

I am staying on ultrasimple this week too with the exception of I added tomatoes to my stir fry yesterday...yummy! and I added a probiotic soy unsweet yogurt to my shakes and that made me feel a ton better too!

I'm feeling more on track now. Thanks for your support!

my plan is to move into phase 1 of the UM fully next Monday, stay on that for 2-3 weeks before moving into phase 2 and reintroducing eggs, then gluten, then dairy.

Great to hear things got

Great to hear things got working for you!

I'm envious that you can eat soy. I'm a fish-eating vegetarian only because I can't tolerte soy, most beans, some nuts, rice or gluten. I would love to go completely vegetarian, but I would have a real hard time with protein with this many limitations. Maybe once I'm done reintroducing I'll be able to go off fish.

That's great! I lost a total of 2.2 pounds last week. So far this week I've lost 1.2 pounds. That's not ver ydramatic but it's progress. I stayed with the UltraSimple diet meals this week except I added some red and yellow bell peppers, some cherry tomatoes and some citrus. It was nice to have a little more variety. I ate the peppers and tomatoes for three days and then started the citrus yesterday. I didn't notice any difference in how I'm feeling.

I've been using the  packaged meals for the last two weeks. I'll go back to cooking my own tomorrow. The meals have been very tasty and convenient but I'm ready to go back to cooking. I'm going to try eliminating soy and nuts for a few days to see if that makes any difference.

Also this week my significant other should be back from a four week trip, we're having a potluck at work and my birthday is coming up. It should be an interesting week.

I hope you're still doing well and having great success with the diet.

Good job Frances!

Congrats on your progress! Good luck with the events this week. I went to a few myself this weekend and was able to do just fine staying on the diet.

I weighed this morning and am down to 143. So that is Good from 151 2 weeks ago. My target is 135.

I'm having issues though and I'm trying to figure out what my next steps should be from here. My main symptoms are that I have a lot of bloating and gas and not really good movements and I'm so tired all the time! I'm taking the supplements that are recommended for the constipation. I'm getting frustrated. I'm getting a lot of differing advice:

  • get a colonic(I've never had one)
  • do an 8 day colon cleanse which involves fasting(I'd prefer not to fast)
  • cut soy
  • cut nuts
  • do a liver cleanse

I'm not sure which way to go...I really don't feel energetic and "good" like the book says I'm supposed to feel and I'm tired of my guts not feeling well either. I've never had an issue with soy or nuts before....maybe i just need a good cleaning out?

Thoughts?

Flax

I usually start each day with a Berry Smoothie.  That means I'm adding flax seed.  That seems to have kept me regular.  For my snacks during the day, I usually have some fruit of some kind and a handful of either cashews or almonds.  I take a daily multivitamin as well as Omega-3 fish oil.  I've not had any constipation with what I've been eating, some gas but no constipation.  I've also been drinking more water and exercising almost everyday.  I don't know if that makes a difference.

Probably Detoxing

Well, you're not the only one. I lost 1 kg (2.5 olbs?) and mostly I believe that was water. I had to keep running to the toilet, even in the middle of the night!! Now, that has settled down, I seem to have stopped losing. But I also feel more plugged up despite having a daily movement. I think I do have a bit of a back up with all the fiber (flax) I have introduced suddenly. Perhaps my body is trying to adjust and is dumping and making muscle at the same time. I know you can gain when you do make muscle. Anyway, I've decided not to worry and wait till the end of the week before going on the scale again. I can say that I'm feeling very energetic and some of my health problems are going away.
