Hello all, my name is Lisa from Alberta (Canada). I'm looking to replace old, mindless habits with healthy choices to improve the way my body functions and feels. Now for the real truth: I want to be lighter and stronger.
I make a living working as a nurse in a Psych ICU, my shift is mostly nights (2330 to 0730) - a challenge at times, but I've pretty much nailed the obstacles that go with that over the last 20 years. (Anyone wanting tips, just ask). I enjoy riding my bicycle, and am amazed how far I can go. With only 5 months in a season to ride, I'm trying to get out as much as possible. I'm also a novice quilter, mostly in the winter months. I'd be happy to keep in contact with others who are out there, to compare notes or share a laugh.
After reading the Ultrametabolism book from the library and trying to live by the principals, I have fallen off the wagon. Now I've got my own copy and am starting the journey again formally. I was rivetted reading about how the body works and the rationale for what to eat and what not to eat. Dr. Hyman's approach is sound so logical, how could I deny my body what it needs to function properly?
I was finding my way around this website and thought I'd say hello. I'm just in the first week of prepping for detox. Does this mean I'm actually in my first week, or does that start with the actual detox? Getting back to food preparation will be my biggest challenge, but I know once I get into it, it will be fun and get my creative side going. We had Chinese take out today - the better choices - and my hubby said "That was the best thing you made all week!" Ha ha, it was the ONLY thing I didn't make all week. He was so right.
Later,Lisa.

I'm new too

Hi. Nice intro. I'm new too. I have to admit that I don't really struggle with my weight and have been practicing many of the principles for a couple years - the exercise for many years - but I just finished reading UltraMetabolism and came online to view some of the resources and stumbled upon the message boards.
i am always struggling against the social forces that put so many toxic foods in the paths of my children and husband and others in my family, and I am a maverick in my community, so it is heartening to find others with the same interest and knowledge. I notice that many haven't read the book, so kudos - I think it is an amazing book and could change so many lives if people would only read it.
Hard to keep doing the same old things when you know what they do to you, isn't it? And, BTW, I have to accommodate my husband as well, though he won't even eat Chinese take-out - too many vegetables!

I'm now starting week 4 of UM. I am 7.5 lbs lighter, my joints don't ache as much, and my jeans are getting baggy. I have so much more energy, I'm not sure if I have insomnia or I just don't need as much sleep as I used to. My skin is smoother and more even toned. I have been cooking every day which is a huge change for me, (I go thru spurts), and getting more creative making my own recipes. I enjoyed a demo of an infrared sauna, I'm going to finance one with the money I'll be saving by quitting smoking (it's been 10 hours right now). I think these principals are realistic for a lifetime. I take it seriously, but remain flexible and creative. I've put on 387km this bicycle riding season, and am registered for a 5k walk for charity in September (Schizophrenia Society of Alberta-see walkandrun.com if you can help them out by sponsoring me online - search participant Lisa B - thanks for considering). See you around the Boards later, Lisa.
That's great!

It sounds like you're doing a lot and getting great results. Good luck wiht the smoking - I'd bet that's the hardest part.

There are some excellent ideas for recipes in the USD companion guide, but I've started to go through some of my cookbooks to see what I can do to improvise.
Two things I've found invaluable:
One thing that helps replace the butter on steamed veggies and sweet potatoes... fresh squeezed lemon juice and sea salt. (I rarely even use that any more but it helped me at the start).
The other is Ultrabroth! Use it in cooking. I always make an extra container for me to cook with during the week. 1Tbsp of oil sometimes just doesn't seem to go far, so add some broth. If veggies seem a little bland, add some spices and Ultrabroth in a stirfry. Cook rice in Ultrabroth to make it more flavorful.
I haven't cooked in over 4 years (I retired when I lost my appetite. I thought it was because I was burnt out after cooking for 30 some years.) Now, I've suddenly discovered my love of cooking again and I find if I make myself prepare ahead... I have all sorts of wonderful ideas!
I hope to be submitting a recipe for "Butter Chicken", which I make with no butter or chicken (I'm vegetarian) but it tastes very much like the Butter Chicken I used to eat before I went vegetarian. I looked up a recipe online and realized with a little adaptation I could get it to work very well even for the first week of UM or USD.
Indian cooking has a very interesting way of combining nuts, fruit and veggies with spices. As long as you don't add the tomatoes and use unsweetened almond milk instead of cow's milk, it's surprising how many you can adapt to the diet. If you have a delicate palate, don't add the peppers :)
Ok, I'm drooling now... off to plan supper!
